Mr. Boykins,

Meet Dr. Rostri

Rumors started to swirl that Dr. Rostri had made it his mission to influence Antoine Boykins upon his arrival to Children’s Hospital of Biloxi, just as he had succeeded in doing with the hospital board members and university leaders. He made an appointment to meet with Mr. Boykins immediately following his arrival. Based on the recent actions of Gene Forester and probably following my suggestion to him as to the reason for such actions, Dr. Rostri likely suspected that Mr. Boykins, at minimum, was keeping a watchful eye over his actions and behaviors. Following my frigid interaction with Mr. Boykins, I couldn’t help but think Dr. Rostri’s “qualifications” or his suitability as the leader of the largest money-making specialty in pediatrics would be inspected closely under the microscope by our new leader. Dr. Potts would later validate the rumor that Dr. Rostri was attempting to influence Mr. Boykins, by explaining how he was the helpless victim and how he was never provided the resources he required to succeed. While there was certainly some truth to what Dr. Rostri was saying, it became clear that Mr. Boykins had been provided a thorough briefing, detailing the longstanding history of controlling behavior displayed by Dr. Rostri, including his unrelenting resistance to change, as well as the previous failed attempts by administration to terminate his employment. It was also believed that due to these previous failed attempts, Antoine Boykins had negotiated in his contract that he held the full authority to terminate Dr. Rostri without the requirement for approval from the university or hospital board members. Upon their first meeting, Mr. Boykins outlined a clear list of expectations that Dr. Rostri was to follow. He was given a timeline of six months to achieve these goals or at least he was given this timeline to change his controlling ways, and while the details outlined between the two of them were never made public, the timeline laid out was crystal clear. Dr. Rostri did not have a great track record when it came to change. During the previous administration, prior to their failed attempts to terminate his employment, they hired a life coach for him. The coach and he would meet weekly to review behavior challenges and the coach would suggest new ways to approach addressing the behavior. The coach lasted a total of two weeks before he actually quit. Life coaches are trained specialists who have extensive experience in dealing with difficult people. I have known many physicians who have electively utilized or been forced to utilize a life coach; however, Gerald Rostri was the first I had ever encountered that actually caused a life coach to quit! Given this knowledge pertaining to his past experience related to behavior intervention, I was skeptical that Mr. Boykins would succeed with his proposed interventions, although perhaps he never wanted Dr. Rostri to succeed and merely wanted to say that he provided him ample opportunity to change before terminating his employment. I believed this was likely the case based on the recent failed attempts by Gene Forester to randomly terminate him.
